How to prepare for and take the GRE
About 90 days
The GRE General Test is asked for by Fulbright and many US graduate programmes. It tests verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning (maths) and analytical writing.
Book the test
- Create an ETS account and book the GRE General Test at a test centre in Pakistan or at home.
- Use your passport name exactly.
- Check the current fee on the ETS site before paying.
- Official scores arrive about 8 to 10 days after the test.
Prepare for free (8 to 12 weeks)
- Start with the two free POWERPREP practice tests from ETS to get a baseline.
- Maths is school-level (algebra, geometry, data), but questions are tricky. Practise a set every day.
- Build vocabulary in context by reading English newspapers and journals, not by memorising long lists.
- Practise the "Analyze an Issue" essay with a 30-minute timer.
Tips
- Scores are valid for 5 years, so taking it early is fine.
- You can retake it after 21 days if you need a higher score.
Typical time: 2 to 3 months of preparation plus about 10 days for scores.
